The Impact of Smartphones on Human Development in Early Childhood – Latest Findings

The text analyses the impact of the presence of screen technologies (mainly smartphones) on infant development. The author pays particular attention to the language context and, in light of recent research, emphasises the importance of responsive parental presence and interaction with the child during key developmental periods. She presents research showing that excessive smartphone use by caregivers can lead to a reduction in the quality of contact with the child, a reduction in infant‑directed speech, and a weakening of the emotional bond. While presenting a balanced approach to high technology, she also does not overlook the positive aspects of using it – as a tool to support the parent. She points out that the foundations of language acquisition are crucial for further communicative development.
