This article discusses the potentially negative impact of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) environment on the development of a full-term newborn requiring hospitalization due to a congenital heart defect or a gastrointestinal defect. The main factors that may contribute to developmental disorders include stress, noise, pain associated with medical procedures, isolation from parents and diversity of non-physiological sensory experiences. The tremendous progress has been made in the last 25 years in surgical treatment and perioperative care of infants has resulted in the need for a longer stay of the newborn in the intensive care unit. Therefore it is so important to undertake early therapeutic interventions already during the newborn’s stay in the neonatal unit. It is also important for the speech therapist to understand the child’s medical history in order to identify those developmental areas that most require support.
